What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students add relevant ideas during group discussions and projects. They listen closely, respond to classmates’ points, and give specific feedback that helps the group improve its work.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student enters the conversation without taking it over, refers to a peer’s idea, and extends a point. The student gives respectful, useful feedback and acts on feedback received.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think participation means talking often, agreeing with everyone, or waiting silently for their turn. Feedback may be vague, overly personal, or limited to praise such as “good job.”

How to Assess It

Give groups four minutes to choose the strongest of three possible themes for a shared class text. Record one idea, one paraphrase, and one specific suggestion from each student.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups evidence cards from a class text and have them build a poster, with each student adding and explaining one card.

  2. Ask, “Which group habit helps everyone contribute, and which habit shuts people out?” then require students to cite a recent example.

  3. Run a feedback relay where teams revise one paragraph after each member gives one specific, text-based suggestion.

  4. Simulate an editorial meeting where students choose a school-news headline, assign roles, and give feedback before publication.
