What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify what a writer believes or prefers and find the reasons that support that view. They create their own opinion texts with a clear choice, relevant reasons, linking words, and a closing.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can point out an author’s opinion and the reasons used to support it. They can write or speak a clear opinion, add connected reasons, and use linking words such as because and also.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may state a preference without giving a reason. They may treat a fact as an opinion, repeat the same reason, or use unrelated details.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Which classroom pet would be best? State your opinion and give two different reasons.”

Read two short opinion paragraphs and ask, “Which writer makes the stronger case, and which reasons helped you decide?”
Play Reason Match by pairing opinion cards with supporting reason cards, then explain why each match makes sense.
Examine two snack advertisements and list the words or pictures each uses to persuade customers.
