What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify a writer’s opinion and the reasons used to support it. They explain how examples, facts, and persuasive words affect readers. They use these techniques in their own speaking and writing.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can point to the writer’s opinion, underline supporting reasons, and explain how each reason connects. The student can write an opinion paragraph with clear reasons, examples, and linking words.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse a fact with an opinion or think every personal preference is persuasive. They may give unrelated reasons, repeat the opinion, or use strong words instead of support.

How to Assess It

Give students this prompt: “Our class should have ten extra minutes of recess.” Ask them to write two relevant reasons and one supporting example.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups sentence strips with opinions, reasons, and examples, then have them build logical opinion paragraphs on chart paper.

  2. Ask, “Should homework be optional?” Students state a view, give two reasons, and respond to a classmate’s reasoning.

  3. Play Reason Match by having students race to pair opinion cards with the strongest supporting reason cards.

  4. Read two school lunch menu proposals, then have students recommend one using details about cost, nutrition, and student preferences.
