What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students examine how writers use claims, reasons, evidence, and word choice to influence readers. They explain the effect of these choices and use them to create clear opinion texts.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students identify an author’s claim, reasons, evidence, and persuasive word choices. They explain how those choices guide a reader, then use the same techniques in their own opinion writing.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat opinions as facts or give reasons that do not support the claim. They may also name a technique, such as strong word choice, without explaining how it affects the reader.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Write a claim about school recess, support it with one relevant reason and fact, then underline the words chosen to persuade readers.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups claim, reason, evidence, and persuasive phrase cards to sort, then build one convincing opinion paragraph on chart paper.

  2. Ask students to compare two snack advertisements and write which is more convincing, naming one technique that shaped their response.

  3. Play Persuasion Match by having partners match claim cards with the strongest reason and evidence cards, then defend each match.

  4. Read two product reviews for the same item, then have students identify how ratings, details, and word choice influence a buyer.
