What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify what a writer or speaker thinks about a topic and notice the reasons given. They state their own opinion and support it with a clear reason.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can point out an author’s opinion and the reasons used to support it. They can state their own opinion, add a connected reason, and use words such as because.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may mistake a fact for an opinion or give a reason that does not support their choice. They may state what they like without using because or another linking word.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Which class pet should we choose? Write your opinion and one reason using because.”

Discuss or write: “Should recess be longer?” State your opinion and explain one reason using because.
Play Opinion Match by pairing opinion cards with supporting reason cards, then explain why each pair belongs together.
Read two snack choices on a class menu, then write which one the cafeteria should serve and give one reason.
