What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find the writer’s position, reasons, and checkable details in an opinion text. They describe how each part helps the writer convince the reader.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly label the writer’s position, reasons, and facts in a short passage. They explain how a fact supports a reason and strengthens the writer’s case.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may label any sentence with a number as a fact, even when it cannot be checked. They may confuse the writer’s position with a reason or choose details that do not support it.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Read, “Our class should get ten more minutes of recess. More play helps us return ready to learn. We have 15 minutes now.” Underline the position, circle the reason, and box the fact.
