What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students notice how headings, pictures, captions, print size, color, and layout affect meaning. They use those features to make texts clear for a specific reader and purpose.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students explain how a heading, picture, caption, font size, or color guides a reader. They choose design features that fit the intended reader and reason for the text.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think larger print always means more important information. They may add pictures, color, or bold words for decoration without considering the reader or purpose.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short announcement with no design features. Ask them to add a heading, one image, and one emphasized phrase, then explain each choice.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a plain page of text, sticky notes, markers, and picture cards to redesign it for younger readers.
Compare two book pages and discuss: Which design choices help the reader, and what purpose does each choice serve?
Play Design Match by pairing audience and purpose cards with suitable headings, images, fonts, captions, and page layouts.
Examine a lunch menu or event flyer, then identify how its layout helps people find information and make choices.
