What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students notice how a text’s form changes where information appears and the order in which readers meet it. They compare stories, posters, directions, and videos. They arrange their own ideas to fit a chosen format and purpose.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given one topic in two formats, a student can explain why a story uses sequence while a poster uses headings, labels, and images. The student can choose and organize features that help a reader follow a short text.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think every text should unfold like a story. They may treat pictures, headings, captions, or spoken words as decoration instead of information. They may use the same arrangement for a poster, directions, and a narrative.

How to Assess It

Give students six facts about caring for a class plant. Ask them to arrange the facts as either a how to card or an informational poster, then explain one layout choice.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Cut apart a recipe, a story, and a poster, then have pairs rebuild each text and explain the placement of each piece.

  2. Show a weather report and a weather poster, then ask students which format helps them plan recess and why.

  3. Play Format Match by pairing topic cards with story, directions, poster, or video cards and defending each match.

  4. Have students redesign the classroom cleanup rules as a sign using a heading, numbered steps, and simple pictures.
