What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify how mode and genre shape a text’s organization. They choose and arrange ideas differently when writing an argument, narrative, explanation, or another genre.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can explain why an author places a claim, event, example, or detail in a particular spot. They can reorganize the same content effectively for two different modes or genres.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat genre as only a label or topic. They may use the same introduction, body, and conclusion structure for every text without considering purpose or mode.

How to Assess It

Give students four facts about later school start times. Ask them to outline a news report and a persuasive letter, then explain one structural difference.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs six event and fact cards, then have them arrange the same content as a news report and a personal narrative.

  2. Compare a podcast transcript and editorial on one issue, then write how each genre controls the order of claims, evidence, and context.

  3. Run a genre-switch challenge: teams draw a genre card, rearrange paragraph strips to fit it, then defend one placement.

  4. Rewrite a school event announcement as an email and a 30-second video script, changing the opening and order for each audience.
