What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose an organizational pattern that fits the form they are creating. They explain how switching among print, audio, visual, and digital forms changes sequence, emphasis, and supporting details.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can reshape the same source material into two different forms, such as an editorial and an infographic. They can explain why each version orders, groups, and emphasizes information differently.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat mode as a visual choice rather than a decision that changes organization. They may use a five-paragraph essay structure for every genre or confuse genre conventions with fixed rules.

How to Assess It

Give students six facts about a local issue. Ask them to outline both a news article and a podcast segment, then label one key structural difference.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups a cut-up article to arrange as a news report, then rearrange the same details as a public service announcement.

  2. Ask students to explain how a personal essay would change if rewritten as a speech for a school board meeting.

  3. Play a genre sort using sample openings, transitions, and endings, with students matching each piece to the form it best serves.

  4. Compare a company press release with news coverage of the same event, noting how each arranges facts to guide its audience.
