What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students notice how pictures, labels, headings, colors, print size, and page layout guide a reader. They choose design features that fit the audience and purpose of their own text.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can explain how a title, picture, label, color, or print size helps a reader. They can choose useful design features for a simple story, poster, or information page.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think pictures, color, and large print are only decorations. They may use the same layout for every text or add features that distract from the message.
How to Assess It
- Give students the message “Wash your hands.” Ask them to redesign it for a first-grade bathroom sign and explain one design choice.

Ways to Teach It
Cut apart a title, picture, labels, and facts from a weather page, then have students arrange them for easy reading.
Compare a storybook page with a safety poster, then ask which design choices help each reader and why.
Play a matching game using purpose cards, such as inform or entertain, and feature cards, such as labels, pictures, or bold print.
Redesign a classroom or cafeteria sign so younger students can understand its message quickly.
