What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students notice that stories, posters, letters, and videos arrange ideas in different ways. They choose and place words, pictures, and other features to fit their message and audience.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can explain why a story uses an order of events while a poster highlights key information. They can arrange words and pictures to make a simple text easy to follow.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think every text should look like a story with full sentences. They may add pictures or large words as decoration without considering how those choices help the reader.

How to Assess It

Give students a title, picture, and three details about a missing dog. Ask them to arrange the parts as a poster and explain one placement choice.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs cut-apart parts of a recipe and a story, then have them arrange each and explain why the orders differ.

  2. Ask students to compare a spoken class announcement with a poster and write which details should stand out in each.

  3. Play a matching game with genre cards and feature cards, such as story with sequence or poster with large heading.

  4. Walk through the school to photograph signs, menus, and labels, then discuss how each layout helps people find information.
