What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students notice how pictures, print size, color, sound, and word choice shape a message. They create simple stories, signs, captions, or recordings for a clear purpose and audience.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can explain how a picture, color, title, sound, or word changes how a text feels or works. The student can choose features that fit a specific reader and purpose.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat color, pictures, or sound as decoration that does not affect the message. They may choose tiny print, unclear images, or silly words that do not fit the audience or purpose.

How to Assess It

Ask students to make a library reminder for first graders using a heading, picture, and one sentence. Have them explain how one choice helps readers.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs paper, markers, and picture cards to make two lunch signs, one for classmates and one for visiting adults.

  2. Show two book covers and ask, “Which one feels funny, and what picture, color, or words create that feeling?”

  3. Play Feature Match by pairing big title, bright color, caption, and sound effect cards with purpose or audience cards.

  4. Have students redesign the class handwashing reminder with a clear picture, short directions, and large print for younger students.
