What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students examine how layout, images, sentence length, dialogue, sound, and other choices shape a reader’s response. They create and revise texts for different purposes, genres, and audiences.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can point to a specific craft or design choice and explain how it shapes meaning, tone, or audience response. They can create or revise a text using features that fit its purpose and genre.

Common Misconceptions

Students may name a feature without explaining its effect. They may also assume that adding images, color, or informal language always improves a text, regardless of purpose or audience.

How to Assess It

Show a public service ad. Ask students to identify one design choice, explain its effect on tone, and revise it for a younger audience.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a printed article, scissors, and markers; have them redesign it for younger readers and label three choices.

  2. Ask students to write: How would removing the image change the tone and message of this public service poster?

  3. Play Genre Switch: teams draw an audience card and remake the same message as a podcast intro, review, or infographic.

  4. Students turn a school event announcement into an email and social media post, then compare which features suit each audience.
