What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students examine how writers use words, structure, images, sound, and layout in different kinds of texts. They create their own texts and make choices that fit the audience and purpose.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students create a clear text in a chosen genre and mode. They select features such as dialogue, headings, images, word choice, or layout and explain how those choices shape the reader’s response.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think changing the font or adding a picture always improves a text. They may also name a feature without explaining how it affects the reader or fits the genre.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Rewrite a school announcement as a comic panel or personal letter. Name one feature you changed and explain how it affects the audience.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a paragraph, sticky notes, and markers; they add a heading, image, and caption, then explain each choice.

  2. Ask: How would this message change as a comic, letter, or news report? Name two craft choices.

  3. Play Genre Switch: students draw audience and genre cards, rewrite three sentences, and classmates identify the choices that reveal both.

  4. Compare a weather alert, forecast graphic, and television script, then create the version most useful for families planning an outdoor event.
