What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students examine how wording, structure, layout, images, and sound affect a text. They create and revise texts so their choices fit a clear purpose, audience, genre, and tone.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students compare how two texts on the same topic use structure, wording, images, or sound differently. They create a text with deliberate choices and explain how those choices shape the reader’s response.

Common Misconceptions

Students may name a feature without explaining its effect on the reader. They may confuse tone with mood or add images, sound, and formatting as decoration rather than purposeful choices.

How to Assess It

Give students a short news paragraph. Ask them to redesign it as a three-panel social media post for teenagers and annotate two choices that suit the audience.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups a cut-up article to rearrange, then add a headline, image, and caption that create a clear tone.

  2. Ask students to compare a print advertisement and video advertisement, then write which craft choices best reach the intended audience.

  3. Play Craft Choice Match by pairing purpose cards with feature cards, then require students to defend each match in one sentence.

  4. Have students redesign a school announcement as an email for families and a social media post for students. Translate contrasting craft choices into revised language.
