What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare how structure, word choice, imagery, visuals, and sound shape a reader's response. They create or revise messages for different audiences, purposes, modes, and genres.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify a specific craft choice, cite an example, and explain its effect on the reader. They make deliberate choices in their own work and justify those choices clearly.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name a feature without explaining its effect. They may treat visuals as decoration, confuse tone with mood, or change format without adapting language and structure.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Rewrite a school announcement as a student social post, then label two craft choices and explain how each affects the audience.
