What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine how writers and creators use structure, language, visuals, sound, and formatting in different kinds of texts. They create texts and make craft choices that fit the intended meaning, tone, purpose, and audience.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose features that fit a genre, purpose, and audience. They can explain how details such as structure, word choice, visuals, dialogue, and formatting shape meaning and tone.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may change only the topic and call it a new genre. They may add images, headings, or dialogue without explaining how those choices affect the reader. They may also use the same tone for every audience.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short announcement and ask them to rewrite it as a text message for a friend. Have them name two changes and explain each choice.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups a printed story to cut apart and redesign as a comic, then label how panels, captions, and images change meaning.
Ask students to compare a news report and personal post about one event, then explain how craft choices shape tone and audience response.
Play Craft Choice Match by pairing feature cards, such as dialogue or headings, with genre, purpose, audience, and effect cards.
Have students create both a school flyer and social media caption for the same event, adjusting wording, visuals, and details for each audience.
