What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine how words, structure, visuals, sound, and format shape a text's effect. They create texts in different genres and modes for clear purposes and audiences.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can identify exact features, such as narration, layout, imagery, pacing, or sound, and explain their effects. They can adapt one message for a new genre, purpose, or audience while making deliberate choices.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat genre as a topic rather than a set of choices about structure, language, and format. They may add images or sound without explaining how those features shape meaning or tone. They may also change the format while ignoring the intended audience.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Rewrite a formal school notice as a three-slide social media post for students. Label two design choices and explain their effects.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups a news story, scissors, images, and captions, then have them redesign it as a one-page infographic for younger readers.
Ask students to explain how changing narration, layout, or sound would alter the tone and audience of a familiar scene.
Play genre swap: students draw a genre and audience, then rewrite the same paragraph using fitting features in eight minutes.
Have students turn a school announcement into both an email to families and a short social media post for students.
