What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students compare stories, posters, how-to pages, videos, and recordings to notice what kinds of ideas each one includes. They choose information that fits the format, audience, and purpose when creating their own texts.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can explain why a how-to page includes steps while a story includes characters and events. They can select details, pictures, or sounds that fit a chosen format and purpose.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think every format should include the same details. They may choose ideas based on personal preference rather than the audience and purpose. They may also confuse how a text looks with what information belongs in it.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: You need to teach classmates how to wash their hands. Choose a story, how-to page, or song, then list two details you would include and explain why they fit.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs picture, fact, dialogue, and direction cards to sort onto a story, how-to page, or poster mat, then explain each choice.

  2. Show a weather video and forecast chart, then ask, “What information fits each form, and why?”

  3. Play Format Match: students draw a purpose card and choose suitable content cards for a letter, story, poster, or recording.

  4. Have students create a lost-pet flyer, selecting details and images that help neighbors identify and return the pet.
