What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students notice that stories, signs, lists, pictures, and videos include different kinds of details. They choose ideas and information that fit the text they make.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can explain why a sign uses short words and clear pictures, while a story includes characters and events. They create a text with fitting details.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think every text should include characters and a story. They may focus on decoration instead of choosing details that help the audience.

How to Assess It

Exit prompt: “We need to remind families about pajama day. Choose a poster or story, then draw or dictate two details to include.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs picture and word cards to sort onto a birthday invitation, grocery list, or story page.

  2. Ask, “What belongs on a lost-pet poster, and what does not belong?” Record and discuss students’ reasons.

  3. Play Text Match by having students match detail cards, such as price or character, to signs, lists, videos, and stories.

  4. Examine a school lunch menu and a food story, then name which information helps someone choose lunch.
