What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students plan and write texts that use more than one organizational pattern, such as chronology, comparison, cause and effect, or problem and solution. They choose each pattern to clarify and strengthen the main point.

What Mastery Looks Like

A strong student selects structures that fit each part of the text, such as chronology for background and cause and effect for analysis. The shifts are clear, connected, and purposeful.

Common Misconceptions

Students may switch structures randomly or assume each piece must use only one pattern. They may add transitions without making the relationship between ideas clear.

How to Assess It

Give students a short article draft with one flat structure. Ask them to revise its outline using two organizational patterns and explain how each supports the main point.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups printed paragraphs from a mixed-structure essay, then have them arrange and label the sections to create a clear argument.

  2. Ask students to explain when a climate change essay might shift from cause and effect to problem and solution.

  3. Play Structure Switch, where students rewrite one paragraph using chronology, comparison, or cause and effect while keeping its main point.

  4. Analyze a feature article or editorial to identify how its writer combines structures to guide readers toward a conclusion.
