What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose and combine more than one organizational pattern within a text. They connect the patterns smoothly so the order of ideas strengthens the main message.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students combine structures such as cause and effect, comparison, chronology, and problem and solution. Their transitions make each shift clear, and each section strengthens the central message.

Common Misconceptions

Students may use one pattern for the whole piece, even when ideas need different treatment. They may switch structures abruptly or add headings without clear links to the central message.

How to Assess It

Give students six notes about school start times. Ask them to arrange the notes using two structures and explain how the arrangement strengthens one central claim.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups paragraph cards from an essay, then have them arrange the cards using two structures and label each structural shift.

  2. Ask students to explain which two structures would best support an argument about later school start times and why.

  3. Play Structure Switch: students rewrite one short paragraph from chronological order into cause and effect, then compare the impact.

  4. Examine a feature article that combines a personal story with problem and solution, then map how both structures support its message.
