What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students shape ideas and source material into a focused, organized presentation. They choose relevant evidence and use language, pacing, visuals, and delivery that fit the audience and purpose.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student presents a focused point, orders details logically, and explains the evidence. The student uses steady pacing, precise language, purposeful visuals, and delivery suited to the audience.

Common Misconceptions

Students may read slides word for word or assume speaking loudly makes a message understandable. They may list facts without explaining how the evidence supports the main point.

How to Assess It

Give students a short article and ask them to deliver a 60-second explanation of its main idea using one supporting detail. Check organization, accuracy, pacing, and explanation.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups claim, evidence, and explanation cards to arrange, then use the sequence to deliver a 90-second presentation.

  2. Compare two recorded one-minute presentations, then write which speaker was easier to follow and cite two specific delivery choices.

  3. Run a clarity relay where teams revise vague statements into precise ones, then present the improved versions without reading.

  4. Have students pitch one school improvement to the principal using a statistic, a student quote, and a clear recommendation.
