What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read unfamiliar first-grade stories, poems, and informational texts aloud, saying the printed words correctly. They notice when reading sounds wrong and reread to fix errors.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Across stories, poems, and informational passages, the student reads nearly all words correctly with few pauses. The student notices mistakes, checks the print, and rereads the sentence accurately.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think fast reading is accurate reading. They may guess from a picture or first letter, skip small words, or ignore endings such as -s and -ed.
How to Assess It
- Give each student a new 60-word first-grade passage and mark skipped, added, or changed words. Ask the student to reread any sentence with an error.

Ways to Teach It
Place sentence strips in order, then have students track each word with a pointer while reading the completed passage aloud.
After partner reading, ask students to name one word they corrected and explain which letters helped them fix it.
Play Accuracy Detective by reading a short passage with planned mistakes and having students identify and correct each changed word.
Have students read a classroom schedule or simple recipe aloud to a partner, who follows each direction exactly as read.
