What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students read new grade-level stories, poems, and informational passages while recognizing most words correctly. They use word parts, context, and rereading to fix mistakes and improve accuracy over time.

What Mastery Looks Like

On a first read, the student reads most words correctly without relying on pictures or teacher prompts. When an error changes the meaning, the student notices and rereads the word or sentence.

Common Misconceptions

Some students guess words from the first letter, a picture, or the sentence topic. Others think fast reading matters more than correct reading. Students may ignore endings, skip small words, or continue after an error changes the meaning.

How to Assess It

Give each student an unfamiliar 100-word grade-level passage to read aloud. Mark errors and self-corrections, calculate the percentage read correctly, and save the score for the next check.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs an unseen passage and sticky notes; students mark difficult words, split them into parts, then reread accurately.

  2. Ask, "What did you do when a word did not look right or make sense?" and chart students' repair strategies.

  3. Run an accuracy relay where students read sentence cards, earn a point for each exact reading, and reread any missed word.

  4. Use a school lunch menu or library notice with unfamiliar terms, and have students practice reading it accurately for a partner.
