What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use the U.S. Constitution, Florida Constitution, and a local charter to find age, citizenship, elector, and residency requirements. They compare requirements across offices and identify which document governs each office.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can determine whether a candidate qualifies for president, Congress, Florida governor, state legislator, or a selected local office. They support each decision with the correct source and requirement.

Common Misconceptions

Students often assume every office has the same age and residency rules. They may treat education, work experience, party membership, or winning an election as constitutional qualifications.

How to Assess It

Give students one candidate profile and source excerpts. Ask which three listed offices the person qualifies for and require one cited detail for each decision.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups office cards, candidate cards, and source excerpts, then have them sort each candidate into eligible and ineligible columns.

  2. Ask students to write which qualification changes most across offices and explain why lawmakers may have set different rules.

  3. Play Qualification Match, where teams pair offices with age, citizenship, elector, and residency cards, earning points for correct source citations.

  4. Choose a recent local candidate and compare the candidate's public biography with requirements listed in the city or county charter.
