What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify common features of early civilizations, including cities, government, religion, social classes, specialized jobs, public works, writing, and technology. They use evidence from a society to explain which features were present.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can examine a description or artifact and connect it to a feature of civilization. They can explain why several connected features, not one achievement alone, indicate an organized civilization.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think civilization means a society was peaceful, wealthy, or superior to others. They may also treat farming, large buildings, or writing alone as enough evidence of civilization.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short description of an ancient settlement. Ask them to identify three features of civilization and underline one supporting detail for each.

Ways to Teach It
Groups build a model settlement with blocks and labels showing government, religion, specialized jobs, public works, social classes, and record keeping.
Ask students to write: Which three features would be hardest for a large city to function without, and why?
Play Civilization Feature Match by pairing artifact cards, such as tax records or canals, with the feature each artifact represents.
Students examine their town's roads, government offices, religious buildings, jobs, and records, then compare them with features of an early civilization.
