What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students name major natural features associated with ancient regions and locate them on a map. They distinguish naturally formed places from human-built monuments.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students identify a natural wonder from a photo, map, or description. They name its region, classify the feature, and explain how they know it is natural.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse natural wonders with the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, which were built by people. They may also place features on modern continents or countries incorrectly.

How to Assess It

Show one photo and a numbered world map. Ask students to name the natural wonder, choose its map location, and give one clue that it formed naturally.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs photo cards and an atlas, then have them match each natural wonder to its location and place labeled pins on a wall map.

  2. Ask, "Should the Great Pyramid count as a natural wonder?" Students write three sentences explaining how it formed.

  3. Play a clue game where teams hear a region, feature type, or nearby civilization and hold up the matching natural-wonder card.

  4. Use Google Earth to compare one ancient natural wonder with nearby modern roads, cities, farms, or tourist sites.
