What Students Need to Do: Students read maps, tables, and graphs to spot where a problem is concentrated or changing. They use that evidence to choose a practical response and explain why the location makes sense.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can find a location pattern, accurately read legends, scales, axes, and labels, and connect the pattern to a proposed action. The student cites at least two pieces of geographic evidence and explains a reasonable tradeoff.
Common Misconceptions: Students may choose a solution based on opinion rather than map or graph evidence. They often ignore map scale, legends, or graph labels. Some assume that two facts appearing in the same place means one caused the other.
How to Assess It: Give students a neighborhood map showing three flood prone blocks and a bar graph of recent flood reports. Ask, “Where should the town place one drainage project, and which two details support your choice?”

Lesson moves

Place colored stickers on a school area map to mark traffic trouble spots, then choose a safer crossing location from the pattern.
Ask, “Which location should receive help first, and what map or graph evidence supports your choice?”
Run a map detective game where teams identify clusters, compare distances, read a graph, and earn points for evidence backed solutions.
Use local flood, wildfire, or hurricane data to propose where officials should place a shelter, warning sign, or supply site.
