What Students Need to Do: Students identify major national symbols, such as the flag, bald eagle, and Great Seal. They explain what each symbol or founding document represents.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can name a symbol or document from an image, excerpt, or description. They explain its meaning and support their answer with an accurate detail.
Common Misconceptions: Students often confuse the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and Bill of Rights. They may identify a symbol correctly but cannot explain the idea it represents.
How to Assess It: Give students an image of the United States flag and a short Constitution excerpt. Ask them to name each and explain what it represents.

Lesson moves

Have students match picture cards and document excerpts to cards naming the ideas they represent.
Ask students to write which national symbol best represents freedom and support their choice with two details.
