What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how investing can help money grow over time. They compare investment choices by possible return, risk, and length of time.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can choose between a safer, lower-return option and a riskier, higher-return option. The student can explain that investment gains are not guaranteed.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think investing always earns money or works like a savings account. They may also believe that the choice with the highest possible return is always best.
How to Assess It
- Give students two choices: a guaranteed $5 gain or a possible $10 gain with a chance of losing $3. Ask them to choose one and explain the risk.
