What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain how investing can help money grow over time. They compare investment choices by possible return, risk, and length of time.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can choose between a safer, lower-return option and a riskier, higher-return option. The student can explain that investment gains are not guaranteed.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think investing always earns money or works like a savings account. They may also believe that the choice with the highest possible return is always best.

How to Assess It

Give students two choices: a guaranteed $5 gain or a possible $10 gain with a chance of losing $3. Ask them to choose one and explain the risk.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups 100 play dollars to split among cash, savings, and investment cards, then compare possible gains and losses.

  2. Ask students to write: “Would you choose a safer return or a larger possible return, and why?”

  3. Play a risk-and-return matching game using cards for savings accounts, stocks, bonds, and business ownership.

  4. Compare two fictional families planning for college, one saving only and one investing part of their money.
