What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain why a person might buy a stock or another financial asset. They connect the purchase to possible gains from a higher price or payments such as dividends. They recognize that these gains are not guaranteed.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can describe how an investor may earn money by selling an asset for more than its purchase price. The student can also identify dividends as possible income and explain the risk of losing money.

Common Misconceptions

Some students think every investment guarantees a profit. Others confuse buying company stock with buying the company’s products. They may also think investors earn money only when they sell.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Maya buys one share for $20. Write two ways she might earn money from it, then explain why neither outcome is guaranteed.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs paper stock certificates, price cards, and dividend cards, then have them calculate two possible ways an owner could gain money.

  2. Ask students to respond: Why might someone buy a stock instead of keeping all their money as cash?

  3. Play Investment Sort with cards showing stock, a company bond, a bicycle, and a video game, then require teams to justify each choice.

  4. Examine a public company’s stock chart and a sample dividend notice, then name the two possible sources of return.
