What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students distinguish three ways investments can make money. They explain that interest comes from lending, dividends come from company payments, and capital appreciation comes from rising value.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly label the return in a savings, bond, or stock example. They can explain who pays it and whether it is a payment or an increase in value.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think every investment pays interest or that dividends are guaranteed. They may also confuse a stock’s price increase with a cash payment received immediately.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: A bond pays $25, a stock pays shareholders $10, and another stock rises from $40 to $48. Label each return and explain why.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs nine scenario cards to sort under interest, dividends, or capital appreciation, then require one written reason per card.

  2. Prompt students to explain how a bond payment, a shareholder payment, and a stock price increase differ.

  3. Play Investment Income Bingo by reading return scenarios while students cover the matching term and explain one winning square.

  4. Use a savings rate table and stock quote sheet to find one example each of interest, dividends, and price growth.
