What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify items that an owner can let another person use for a fee. They name the owner, the renter, and who receives the income. They tell renting apart from buying or borrowing for free.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a scenario, students identify the property, owner, renter, and rent payment. They give examples beyond housing and explain that ownership does not transfer to the renter.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think the renter earns the income or owns the item after paying. They may also think rent applies only to homes, not cars, tools, or equipment.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: “Maya pays Luis $20 to use his lawn mower for one day. Who earns income, and what property is rented?”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set up a rental shop with toy cars, tools, and apartment cards; students take turns as owners and renters using play money.

  2. Ask, “Why might someone rent an item instead of buying it?” and have students support their answer with one example.

  3. Play Rent or Buy by reading scenario cards while students hold up the correct choice and identify who receives money.

  4. Compare an apartment listing, car rental page, and tool rental ad; name the owner’s property and the payment charged.
