What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students track money received from sales and money spent on supplies, wages, rent, and other costs. They explain how increasing sales or lowering costs can raise profit.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can subtract total costs from sales revenue to find profit in a simple example. They can name a reasonable business choice that might increase profit.

Common Misconceptions

Students often treat all sales revenue as profit. They may forget expenses or assume that raising prices always leads to more profit, even if fewer customers buy.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: A snack stand earns $80 in sales and spends $55. Find the profit and name one way the owner could increase it.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give teams play money, supply cards, and customer orders to run a paper sandwich shop and calculate profit.

  2. Ask students to write which choice would help a bakery more, selling more cupcakes or spending less on boxes, and explain why.

  3. Play Profit Match by pairing revenue and cost cards, then racing to calculate each business owner’s profit.

  4. Compare prices and estimated costs for items at a local restaurant, then discuss what money remains for the owner.
