What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how banks use part of deposited money to make loans. They connect borrower interest payments to the interest banks pay depositors for keeping money in an account.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a simple bank scenario, a student identifies the depositor, bank, borrower, and interest payments. The student explains how the bank earns enough to pay interest and cover its costs.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think deposited money stays untouched in a personal box or that interest is a fee paid by depositors. They may also confuse interest with the original amount deposited.
How to Assess It
- Ask: “A bank earns $8 interest from a loan and pays a depositor $2 interest. Why does the bank pay the depositor?”

Ways to Teach It
Use play money to model a $100 deposit, an $80 loan, an $88 repayment, and a $2 interest payment.
Ask students to write: “Why would a bank pay you to keep your money there?”
Play Interest Detective by sorting cards into depositor, bank, and borrower roles, then tracing who pays and receives interest.
Compare two savings account flyers and circle the interest rate, fees, and reasons a family might choose each account.
