What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students describe how casting a ballot gives citizens a say in leaders and public decisions. They explain how public workers and volunteers meet needs across the state and nation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can give an example and result for each action, such as electing a governor, protecting a national park, or staffing a volunteer shelter. The student explains how participation helps government and communities respond to people's needs.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think voting matters only in presidential elections or that one ballot cannot affect an outcome. They may confuse paid public service with unpaid volunteer work, or believe children cannot help their community.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Choose voting, public service, or volunteerism. Give one state or national example, then explain what could happen if few people participated.

Hold a mock election with paper ballots, tally the results, and discuss how turnout affected whether the choice reflected most students.
Discuss: "Which action would most help after a hurricane, voting, public service, or volunteering, and why?" Use one example as evidence.
