What Students Need to Do: Students explain how voting lets citizens help choose leaders and make public decisions. They describe how election results reflect the choices of participating voters.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students give clear reasons people vote, such as choosing representatives and having a say in government. They explain that each eligible voter gets one vote.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think voting is only for choosing the president or that children can vote in public elections. They may believe one vote never matters.
How to Assess It: Ask students to complete this exit ticket: “Why is voting important in an election? Give two reasons.”

Lesson moves

Hold a secret-ballot class vote between two read-aloud books, count the ballots, and discuss how each vote affected the result.
Ask students to write: “What might happen if only a few eligible citizens voted in an election?”
Play Election Match by pairing voter actions, such as researching candidates, with reasons those actions support fair choices.
Examine a sample local ballot and identify which community leaders or issues voters might choose.
