What Students Need to Do: Students identify problems such as unemployment, bank failures, hunger, and loss of homes or farms. They combine key details into a brief account of daily life in Florida.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students name at least two hardships and explain how each affected Florida families. They use accurate details and connect lost income to problems obtaining food, housing, or health care.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think the stock market crash was the only cause of hardship. They may confuse Florida’s experience with Dust Bowl conditions. Some assume federal relief programs ended poverty immediately.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: In three sentences, explain two hardships Florida families faced and how each changed daily life. Include one detail about work, money, food, or housing.

Lesson moves

Give groups 1930s Florida family budget cards, then remove wages and have them choose how to cover food, rent, and medicine.
Show a Florida breadline or relief-work photograph, and ask students to write three details and one challenge those details reveal.
Play a card match pairing unemployment, bank failures, and crop losses with effects such as hunger, foreclosure, and migration.
Compare a Depression-era Florida relief kitchen with a local food bank, noting the need each served and one difference.
