What Students Need to Do: Students identify immigrant groups that settled in Florida and describe work they did. They explain how that work shaped places such as Ybor City and Tarpon Springs.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can explain that Cuban immigrants built a cigar industry in Ybor City and Greek immigrants worked in the sponge industry in Tarpon Springs. They can connect each group to a Florida place and a specific contribution.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think every immigrant group settled in the same part of Florida or did the same kind of work. They may name a product, such as cigars, without explaining who made it or where.
How to Assess It: Give students a blank Florida map and ask: "Mark Ybor City and Tarpon Springs. Name one immigrant group in each place and describe its work."

Lesson moves

Give pairs a Florida map and cards labeled Cuban cigar workers and Greek sponge divers, then have them place each card by its city.
Ask students to write two sentences answering: "How did cigar making change Ybor City?"
Play a matching game with cards showing an immigrant group, a Florida city, and the work done there.
Show a natural sponge and a cigar box photo, then ask students which Florida immigrant communities are connected to each item.
