What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare how Seminoles, Black Seminoles, enslaved and free African Americans, European settlers, Minorcans, and religious communities experienced territorial Florida. They use evidence to explain each group’s cultural, economic, and social contributions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students describe at least two groups from 1821 to 1845 and explain how laws, conflict, migration, or religion shaped their experiences. They connect specific contributions, such as farming, trade, military service, foodways, or community building, to Florida and the nation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat all Native peoples, Black residents, or European settlers as having the same experiences. They may also confuse the Territorial Period with Spanish rule or assume a contribution had to be voluntary or widely recognized.
How to Assess It
- Give students two short source excerpts from different groups. Ask: “How did each group experience territorial Florida, and what did each contribute?”
