What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify economic, political, and social problems Floridians faced after the Civil War. They summarize how damaged farms, poverty, racial discrimination, and political conflict affected daily life.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can name at least two challenges and explain their effects. They recognize that freedom did not bring immediate equality or safety for formerly enslaved people.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think Reconstruction only meant repairing buildings and farms. They may also assume formerly enslaved people gained equal rights immediately or that all Floridians had the same experience.
How to Assess It
- Use an exit ticket: Name two problems Floridians faced after the Civil War. Explain how one problem affected daily life.

Ways to Teach It
Have pairs sort cards about damaged farms, new rights, unfair laws, poverty, and political conflict into economic, social, or political groups.
Ask students to write three sentences answering: Why was rebuilding Florida about more than repairing roads, farms, and buildings?
Play a matching game where students pair each Reconstruction challenge with its cause and one effect on Floridians.
Show a Florida hurricane recovery photo, then have students compare its rebuilding needs with Florida’s needs after the Civil War.
