What Students Need to Do: Students explain problems Floridians faced after the Civil War. They describe how damaged farms and towns, changes in labor, and fights over rights affected different people.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student names at least two challenges and explains who faced them. They can explain that formerly enslaved Floridians gained freedom but still faced unfair treatment and limited access to land and schools.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think freedom immediately brought equal rights and safe conditions. They may also think every Floridian faced the same problems after the war.
How to Assess It: Ask students to write two challenges Floridians faced after the Civil War. For each one, have them name a group affected and explain how.

Lesson moves

Give pairs cards labeled damaged farm, no land, new school, and unfair law; have them sort each by who faced the challenge.
Ask students to write: How might finding paid work have differed for a formerly enslaved Floridian and a former plantation owner?
Play a matching game with challenge cards and effect cards, such as damaged farms and fewer crops to sell.
Show a Florida county map and ask students how rebuilding a damaged road might affect nearby farms and markets.
