  Describe Florida's involvement (secession, blockades of ports, the battles of Ft. Pickens, Olustee, Ft. Brooke, Natural Bridge, food supply) in the Civil War.

What Students Need to Do

Students explain how secession, slavery, war, emancipation, and Reconstruction affected Florida. They sequence major events and use maps, timelines, or short sources to connect events with effects on different groups.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can sequence Florida’s secession, the Battle of Olustee, the end of slavery, and readmission to the Union. The student explains Florida’s supply role, the Union blockade, and changes after the war.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think most Civil War fighting happened in Florida or that all Floridians supported the Confederacy. They may assume ending slavery brought immediate equality or confuse Reconstruction events with wartime events.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Put these events in order: Florida secedes, Battle of Olustee, slavery ends, Florida rejoins the Union. Choose one event and explain one effect on Florida.

   Give pairs dated Florida event cards, yarn, and clothespins, then have them build a timeline from secession through readmission.

   Ask students to write: How did the war and Reconstruction change life for enslaved people, soldiers, women, and farmers in Florida?

   Play a three-column sort where teams place Florida examples under cause, wartime event, or Reconstruction effect and defend one choice.

   Use an online map to locate the nearest Civil War or Reconstruction site, then write what its marker tells and leaves out.
