What Students Need to Do: Students connect Florida’s colonial history to Spain, France, and England. They recognize these nations in maps, timelines, flags, and short historical accounts.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can select all three nations from a mixed list and label them on a simple timeline. The student does not include Portugal, the Netherlands, or the United States.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think Spain was the only European nation involved because of St. Augustine. They may confuse England with New England or assume the United States always governed Florida.
How to Assess It: Give students six names: Spain, France, England, Portugal, Netherlands, and United States. Ask them to circle the three European nations that governed colonial Florida.

Lesson moves

Ask students to write which three nations appear in Florida’s colonial story and explain how they know.
