What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students match major explorers, such as Juan Ponce de León, Hernando de Soto, Jean Ribault, and Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, with their goals. They explain motives such as wealth, land, settlement, religion, and national rivalry.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly identify an explorer from a short account or map. They name a supported motive and cite a detail from the account as evidence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often say Ponce de León came only to find the Fountain of Youth. They may also confuse exploration with settlement or assume every expedition had the same goal.
How to Assess It
- Give students four explorer names and four expedition motives to match. Ask them to explain one match using a specific historical detail.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs explorer, route, flag, and motive cards to sort into matched expedition sets.
Ask students to write which motive most shaped Florida exploration and support their answer with two explorers.
Run a clue game where teams identify an explorer from three facts about route, nation, and purpose.
Plot expedition landing sites on a Florida map, then compare them with nearby ports, rivers, and present-day cities.
