What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify major European explorers and connect each one to a homeland, sponsoring country, motive, time period, route, and result. They use maps, timelines, and short sources to compare voyages.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can complete an accurate explorer profile and trace the voyage on a map. They can explain how a sponsor’s goals shaped the route and outcome.

Common Misconceptions

Students often confuse an explorer’s nationality with the country that paid for the voyage. They may mix up routes, dates, and accomplishments. Some describe explored lands as uninhabited, ignoring Indigenous peoples already living there.

How to Assess It

Give students a blank Atlantic map and one explorer’s name. Ask them to label the sponsor, motive, approximate date, route, and one accomplishment.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups explorer cards, yarn, and a large map to build and label each voyage route.

  2. Ask students to write which voyage best met its sponsor’s goal, using two facts as evidence.

  3. Play a matching game with explorer, sponsor, motive, date, route, and accomplishment cards.

  4. Have students locate streets, cities, or landmarks named for explorers and check whether the name connects to an actual voyage.
