What Students Need to Do: Students identify tools and ship designs used during European exploration. They explain how each development made long ocean voyages safer, faster, or more accurate.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students connect a compass, astrolabe, improved maps, lateen sails, and caravels to specific travel problems. They can explain how several developments worked together on a voyage.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think a compass shows exact location or that an astrolabe measures longitude. They may also assume Europeans invented every tool they used or that one invention made exploration possible.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Choose two developments and explain the travel problem each solved. Include one cause-and-effect sentence for each development.

Lesson moves

Use a compass, classroom map, and paper ship route to navigate stations, then record which problem the compass solved.
Write a ship captain's response to this prompt: Which navigation tool would you choose first, and why?
