What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students show the same mathematical situation with words, objects, drawings, equations, tables, or graphs. They explain how the parts of each form match and use them to solve or check the problem.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose useful forms such as objects, drawings, equations, tables, graphs, or words. They move accurately between forms and explain which parts represent the same quantities and relationships.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may change the numbers or relationships when moving from an equation to a diagram, table, or graph. They may create two displays without explaining how they connect. Some think using a second method means repeating the same steps in a different layout.
How to Assess It
- Give students one problem from the current unit. Ask them to solve it, show the situation another way, and label how the two representations match.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs counters, grid paper, and number cards, then have them model one problem with objects, a drawing, and an equation.
Ask students to write which representation makes a given problem easiest to understand and support their choice with two details.
Play Representation Match by having students pair cards showing equivalent stories, diagrams, equations, tables, or graphs.
Use a grocery receipt, bus schedule, or sports statistic and ask students to show the information in two useful forms.
