The Standard

Demonstrate understanding by representing problems in multiple ways. Mathematicians who demonstrate understanding by representing problems in multiple ways: Build understanding through modeling and using manipulatives. Represent solutions to problems in multiple ways using objects, drawings, tables, graphs and equations. Progress from modeling problems with objects and drawings to using algorithms and equations. Express connections between concepts and representations. Choose a representation based on the given context or purpose.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students show quantities and relationships with objects, sketches, tables, graphs, words, or equations. They connect matching parts across forms and choose a form that fits the problem.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given an unfamiliar problem, a student creates two accurate representations and uses either one to find the same solution. The student identifies matching features and explains why one representation suits the problem.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think a new representation changes the answer rather than showing the same relationships differently. They may make decorative drawings, leave graphs or tables unlabeled, or write equations that do not match their models. Some students use a memorized procedure but cannot explain what each number means.

How to Assess It

Use this exit ticket: “Choose one problem from today’s lesson. Solve it in two different ways, label both representations, and explain how they match.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs counters, tiles, or algebra tiles to model a problem, then sketch the model and write a matching equation.

  2. Ask, “What does each part of your equation represent in your diagram, table, or graph?” Students answer in two sentences.

  3. Play a card match with sets showing the same situation as words, diagrams, tables, graphs, and equations.

  4. Use a grocery receipt, bus schedule, or weather chart, and have students show one relationship in a second form.
